LOS ANGELES - Sheriff's investigators finally snagged a sit-down with Mel Gibson on Sunday - but they didn't grill him about allegations he punched his ex-lover.
"We did talk to Mel Gibson on Sunday. It had nothing to do with the domestic violence investigation. It only concerned the allegations of extortion," Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore told the Daily News on Tuesday.
Gibson, 54, claims his Russian babymama Oksana Grigorieva tried to shake him down over a series of damaging phone recordings.
The "Braveheart" star turned over emails and text messages as potential evidence of the extortion claim.
He declined to discuss the alleged beatdown, citing his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, TMZ.com reported.
Sheriff's detectives have opened a criminal probe into Grigorieva's claim that Gibson punched her in the left temple and mouth as she held their infant daughter, Lucia, at his Malibu home Jan. 6.
Gibson's camp has vehemently denies the volatile actor ever hurt Grigorieva or little Lucia.

Lindsay Lohan got some good news, for a change.
The actress, who began serving a 90-day jail sentence on Tuesday, is expected to serve as little as two weeks in jail with good behavior because of overcrowding, said the Los Angeles County sheriff's department.
While in jail Lohan can't smoke cigarettes, but she can still take prescription drugs.
Lohan is allowed to take the stimulant Adderall to treat Attention Deficit Disorder and the sleeping pill Ambien to knock her out at night, TMZ.com reported Wednesday.
The star's estranged dad, Michael Lohan, told TMZ he's upset because those drugs got his daughter into trouble in the first place.
Lohan, 24, reported to jail Tuesday after she was sentenced to three months for violating probation by missing alcohol education classes.
She was on probation for a string of drug and alcohol related crimes in 2007.
While LiLo can use the drugs in the can, she'll have to follow up her jail stint with three months in rehab.
Powerful prescription drugs aren't the only treats Lohan has access to in the slammer.

Kate Major, who recently got engaged to Michael Lohan for some reason, is accusing Lindsay's father of committing domestic violence earlier this week.
We're shocked. He's such an upstanding guy.
According to TMZ, Michael's fiancee and Lindsay's ex-assistant filed a report with the Southampton, N.Y., Town Police claiming he physically attacked her.
On Monday at around 2 p.m., just before Michael flew to L.A. for the court hearing at which Lindsay was jailed, they began arguing, Kate told officials.
Michael allegedly shoved her over a chair, injuring her shoulder.
Even more disturbingly, Kate Major claims that while she was on the ground after being pushed by Michael, the pathetic loser kicked her in the face.
She claims she went to the hospital and has pictures of her injuries. Wow. Looks like M-Lo may have added woman-beater to his gleaming resume.
For his part, Michael admits he got in an argument with Kate over their upcoming TV show (?!) but he didn't touch her and she's making it all up.
